Disney Character Photos

There are two types of character photos at Walt Disney World, Photopass photos taken by Disney photographers while you are meeting and posing with the characters and candid shots you take yourself.

I am a HUGE fan of Photopass photos and have some great ones.  Part of my fandom comes from the fact that I am not a very good photographer and take all my photos with m iPhone 6  BUT......
All that being said I highly suggest you be ready to snap a photo (even with our phone) any time you see a character.  Some characters have set meet and greets with set schedules where you can line up to get your picture taken, others are just wondering around the park and you are likely to just bump into one.  Some of these accidental meetings create great photos and wonderful memories.

The following are all photos I took with my iPhone, with descriptions of where and how:

Look Ma, I'm in a photo!
These three photos are from the Crystal Palace character meal.  The characters visit your table while you are eating from the buffet and pose for pictures and interact with you.  At character meals make sure you have your camera ready and you take photos away from the table (no dirty dishes in the pictures).

My eldest daughter loves Eeyore.
Piglet was waiting for the path to clear so he
hung out at our table for a while and played
with Sydnee.

The kids love the Indiana Jones stunt show at Hollywood Studios and we had heard a rumor if you hang out down front after the show the actors might comes say hi.  In our case the stunt performer playing Marianne came by and met the kids.  This was a real treat and she was excited to grab a photo with the kids!
Sydnee and I were headed back from the restrooms in Dinoland at Animal Kingdom and we ran across Daisy.  She was hanging out but her photographer was gone so we just took some picture with my phone until the photographer returned.  This pose was Daisy's idea and it came out super cute.  It is always fun to ask the characters what they want to do, they will surprise you.

Confession:  I haven't seen the Country Bears Jamboree show at Walt Disney World, although I have seen it at Disneyland.   Sydnee has never seen it so she was a little confused when this crazy looking bear walked up to her when she was throwing a fit in Frontierland because I wouldn't buy her any cotton candy.
Characters have a unique way of changing the course of her day.  You can see in the photo she's still not thrilled but she stopped and got a couple big hugs before we moved on.  They danced a bit after this photo was taken and she forgot about the cotton candy and cheered up.  We left the bears to find other kids to cheer up.

Tusker House in Animal Kingdom

This is another character dining photo.  Mickey was about to take the kids off to the parade they do around the restaurant when we caught this picture of Sydnee and my nephew.  He loved their face paint and told them he wanted his painted, too.

This is at a Run Disney event in 2014.  We took tons of
pictures with the Monster, Inc. crew because no one
else was around.  They posed and danced and were generally silly.

They are discussing Pascal running
off to find a snack.

Epcot is one of my favorite places to meet princesses.  We had just come in the International Gateway entrance and Rapunzel was hanging out by the water.  Sydnee was the only kid around so they had a nice chat.  I have several of them posing for the camera but I likes this one the best because it shows the real interaction and memory.

Ever since we did the Family Magic Tour this summer, Sydnee has been in love with Peter Pan.  She hunts him down every trip and has long chats with him about all kinds of things.  In this photo Peter was hanging out in front of his ride that they had just closed for refurbishment.  Sydnee had walked up to check out the pin board and so he joined her.  They decided to discuss who was in charge of the park, Mickey or Peter.  The discussion got a little heated, but ended in an agreement to disagree and a big hug.

There was no professional photographer, no character coach around, just me and my iPhone watching Disney magic happen.

We don't have special passes or any secret connections.  All these encounters can happen to anyone, so have your camera ready for you never know when the pixie dust will land on your head.

Disney for the whole family?

Sydnee is 6 in this photo. I have been traveling with my family to Disney for more than a decade. My first trip as a parent was in 2003 when my eldest daughter was 4 and my son was 2.  I took my mom, my best friend and my sister with us to Disneyland.   At the time I was on active duty stationed in Washington, DC and my mom and sister lived in Montana so I didn't see them that often.  We had an amazing time and the Disney trips soon became a tradition.  Many of my friends ask me when is the best time to take the trip and who should go. Is Nana too old for Disney?  Should we wait until the baby is older?  Are my teens going to be bored? The short answer is MAYBE but probably not.  In today's blog I will give you pros and cons on these and some other frequently asked questions. Lets start with some basic questions you should ask yourself.  Is this going to be a once in a lifetime trip?  What is the goal of this...

Strollers and Wheelchairs in Disney

I had a friend tell me once that her son (4) didn't do strollers.  They were about to do a 3-day trip to Disneyland and this was her first trip as a parent.  I recommended she still get a stroller and here's why.  Maybe your kid doesn't use a stroller when you are doing normally daily stuff but does your kid log 10 or more miles a day normally?  Does your kiddo need a mid-day nap?  Imagine a trip to the park, what do you carry with you?  Do you want to carry that all day long?  So my friend did ended up renting a stroller and they used it.  There were times when their kid wasn't super happy about it but he was over tired and they just didn't want to carry him, so he rode.  He took one stroller nap and otherwise the stroller carried my friend's backpack/diaper bag most of the time so she didn't have to and that was ok, too.  Sydnee (5) in our garage sale stroller On the other hand, my kiddo LOVES riding in a stroller.  We h...

Disney in the Rain

So you wake up and look out your resort window and it is a torrential downpour.  You have two options, curl back up in bed and wait out the storm or throw together your park bag with a couple extras and head out.  We always chose a park day.  Rain days are less crowded because many locals don't drive in and there are plenty of people who chose the wait it out option.  If you are going to do a rain day here are a couple advantages and a couple pieces of advice.  Do note that some rides, shops and shows will not run if it is raining hard or there is lightning in the area, but this isn't the majority.  On our last trip during Spring Break it poured in the morning and early afternoon on our Animal Kingdom day.  Let's start with what to wear and pack to make sure this doesn't go sideways: 1.  You'll need a rain coat or poncho.  I bring a rain coat for rainy days and save my $.99 poncho for the water rides.  My mom brings an u...
