What to do with those drawings

So, normally I write about racing or some outdoor activity and I did run a huge race over the weekend but my pictures aren't in so I'll save that for later.

This week is a helpful hint blog:

"What do I do with all these pictures my kids make at school?"  I hear that a lot from other moms.  There is only so much fridge space and you feel bad throwing them away.... So here is what a mother of three talented kiddos does.

Step 1.  I differentiate between a coloring page and an art project.  This is more important in the 0-6 crowd.  Color pages get recycled or a short life on the fridge.  Art projects move to step 2.

Step 2.  Does it have an imprint of a foot or hand?
Yes? Label with the artist's name, age and year. Move to step 4.
No? Is it representative of their current skill and look like it's not going to fall apart?
Yes? Label with the artist's name, age and year.  Move to step 3
                              No?  Recycle
Step 3.  Place in a plastic tote (or pile) and sort every 6 months or so.  Chose a couple favorites move those to step 4 everything else moves to step 5.

Step 4.  Frame favorite pieces and create a gallery (I use cheap frames but you can use whatever).  Ours in in our stairwell, which works perfect because there is tons of wall space and I don't need to coordinate with any other theme in the house.  I also have some hanging in my office.

Step 5.  Photograph everything else and upload it into a folder on the cloud with sub-folders for each child and year.  This way you have all those lovelies forever.

Here's what my hallway looks like and some sample of framed artwork:

What do you with your kid's artwork?  What about all their trophies and ribbons?

I Didn't Die on the Mountain

I didn't die on the mountain, although at the starting line I was having visions of my body being found by skiers this winter .       http://runtherut.com/ The back of the expo.     The expo before the 11k start             First turn The 11k starting line Wave 3!!     I toed the starting line of the 11k race in The Rut Mountain Runs on Sunday, September 2.  I knew it would be the most technical trail run I had ever done and the highest but I had trained, or so I thought. The Rut Mountain Runs are part of the Skyrunner USA series.  They take place at Big Sky Ski Resort just outside of Bozeman, Montana.  There are several race options including the Vk, 11k, 28k and 50k.  If you are one of those crazy ultra runner types you can combine the races as the Vk is on Friday, the 28k is on Saturday and the 11k and 50k are on Sunday.  All ...

Disney in the Rain

So you wake up and look out your resort window and it is a torrential downpour.  You have two options, curl back up in bed and wait out the storm or throw together your park bag with a couple extras and head out.  We always chose a park day.  Rain days are less crowded because many locals don't drive in and there are plenty of people who chose the wait it out option.  If you are going to do a rain day here are a couple advantages and a couple pieces of advice.  Do note that some rides, shops and shows will not run if it is raining hard or there is lightning in the area, but this isn't the majority.  On our last trip during Spring Break it poured in the morning and early afternoon on our Animal Kingdom day.  Let's start with what to wear and pack to make sure this doesn't go sideways: 1.  You'll need a rain coat or poncho.  I bring a rain coat for rainy days and save my $.99 poncho for the water rides.  My mom brings an u...

Disney for the whole family?

Sydnee is 6 in this photo. I have been traveling with my family to Disney for more than a decade. My first trip as a parent was in 2003 when my eldest daughter was 4 and my son was 2.  I took my mom, my best friend and my sister with us to Disneyland.   At the time I was on active duty stationed in Washington, DC and my mom and sister lived in Montana so I didn't see them that often.  We had an amazing time and the Disney trips soon became a tradition.  Many of my friends ask me when is the best time to take the trip and who should go. Is Nana too old for Disney?  Should we wait until the baby is older?  Are my teens going to be bored? The short answer is MAYBE but probably not.  In today's blog I will give you pros and cons on these and some other frequently asked questions. Lets start with some basic questions you should ask yourself.  Is this going to be a once in a lifetime trip?  What is the goal of this...
