Colorado Racecation

Last weekend I went to Colorado with Skylar.  She was officially a high school graduate, although she has been out of school since November, and we wanted a girls trip.  I decided to pair it with my Skirt Sports Ambassador retreat so off to Boulder we went.  Colorado is beautiful this time of year as you can see from this first photo.

This is the view from my Saturday morning hike that was part of the retreat.  The retreat was a blast!  As a sorority girl and HR professional you would think I would be over my fear of meeting new people, but nope.  I parked the car Saturday morning about three blocks from the park where we were meeting for the hike and it took a good 5 minutes for me to get out.  By the time I had walked the three blocks to the circle of women dressed like me my heart rate was over 120 bpm.  I had read these women's social media post and had tons in common with them but they were all the cool girls and here I was in my workout clothes, with my backpack on just marching into their presence.

Well, the good news is.... I didn't have a heart attack and I was welcomed into this group of amazing women with open arms. I was never once referred to as the weird girl or the mean HR lady (at least that I know of) and I count that as pretty awesome.

After the hike we listened to some amazing speakers, I ordered tea, a book, protein powder and had a whole new outlook on the day.  I went from feeling like I was on the outside looking in to part of the group and that felt good!  I was on a high from Dr. James Rouse's inspirational speech about optimism and what love would do.  He said before he acts, he asks himself "What would love do?" I asked myself and decided Love would prioritize spending some quality time with my amazing daughter, so I cleaned up after the retreat and raced back to the hotel.

Retreat Speakers (I really found them all amazing):
Maria Uspenski from http://theteaspot.com/
Mary Sutter a Social Media guru who was amazing
Mirna Valerio author of A Beautiful Work in Progress

Skylar and I made a quick trip to Skirt Sports and got some clothes, because that's what we do.  Then off to laughing over lunch and lounging before the race.

The next morning we were up early and out the door.  We laughed and jogged and walked the 5k.  It was a beautiful course, Skylar Instagram storied the entire 3 miles plus some.  We were happy to be done and smiles were had, along with cake and chocolate milk.  Cheering other runners is always a highlight of my day but we didn't have a ton of time so we cheered on a couple and then headed off on her part of the vacation.

A quick Facebook search a couple weeks ago had told me there was a Medieval Festival about an hour north of our hotel on Sunday and we dig that kind of thing.  We picked some fairy and troll dust necklaces, slayed a dragon (Skylar is great with a long bow), watched some Scottish games (the male version of Skirt Sports) and purchased some additional gear for a couple festivals we plan to attend later this summer.

Next up we had made reservations for High Tea at the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse.  It was amazing.  I was on a tea kick because we had cool brew tea from The Tea Spot during our retreat and who doesn't love finger sandwiches.  We enjoyed our tea and laughed over how we could easily have been sitting in Missoula with the atmosphere and clientele.  I was a wonderful evening.
Then we walked around downtown Boulder and took in the sights while dodging bicyclist on the sidewalk (my only complaint).

Monday morning I had to work remotely so I took a nice, long run along the bike path near our hotel and Skylar and packed up and headed home.

I highly recommend a visit to Boulder.  If you want to learn more about the places we visited and the things we did here are the links:

Disney for the whole family?

Sydnee is 6 in this photo. I have been traveling with my family to Disney for more than a decade. My first trip as a parent was in 2003 when my eldest daughter was 4 and my son was 2.  I took my mom, my best friend and my sister with us to Disneyland.   At the time I was on active duty stationed in Washington, DC and my mom and sister lived in Montana so I didn't see them that often.  We had an amazing time and the Disney trips soon became a tradition.  Many of my friends ask me when is the best time to take the trip and who should go. Is Nana too old for Disney?  Should we wait until the baby is older?  Are my teens going to be bored? The short answer is MAYBE but probably not.  In today's blog I will give you pros and cons on these and some other frequently asked questions. Lets start with some basic questions you should ask yourself.  Is this going to be a once in a lifetime trip?  What is the goal of this...

Strollers and Wheelchairs in Disney

I had a friend tell me once that her son (4) didn't do strollers.  They were about to do a 3-day trip to Disneyland and this was her first trip as a parent.  I recommended she still get a stroller and here's why.  Maybe your kid doesn't use a stroller when you are doing normally daily stuff but does your kid log 10 or more miles a day normally?  Does your kiddo need a mid-day nap?  Imagine a trip to the park, what do you carry with you?  Do you want to carry that all day long?  So my friend did ended up renting a stroller and they used it.  There were times when their kid wasn't super happy about it but he was over tired and they just didn't want to carry him, so he rode.  He took one stroller nap and otherwise the stroller carried my friend's backpack/diaper bag most of the time so she didn't have to and that was ok, too.  Sydnee (5) in our garage sale stroller On the other hand, my kiddo LOVES riding in a stroller.  We h...

Disney in the Rain

So you wake up and look out your resort window and it is a torrential downpour.  You have two options, curl back up in bed and wait out the storm or throw together your park bag with a couple extras and head out.  We always chose a park day.  Rain days are less crowded because many locals don't drive in and there are plenty of people who chose the wait it out option.  If you are going to do a rain day here are a couple advantages and a couple pieces of advice.  Do note that some rides, shops and shows will not run if it is raining hard or there is lightning in the area, but this isn't the majority.  On our last trip during Spring Break it poured in the morning and early afternoon on our Animal Kingdom day.  Let's start with what to wear and pack to make sure this doesn't go sideways: 1.  You'll need a rain coat or poncho.  I bring a rain coat for rainy days and save my $.99 poncho for the water rides.  My mom brings an u...
